: I would be really greatful if any one out there could give a beginner some advice on starting out in magic.
: I used to put on magic shows when I was a kid and my mom said that I was rubbish. I have learnt/purchased a few illusions which have changed her mind, but any help or advise would be very helpful.
: Thanks.

Well friend, I think that any and all of us started out as 'rubbish'. It is the practice that turns the tables from rubbish to polish. Do you have the basics of magic? Not just a bunch of tricks and illusions that you can do, but the actual basics. You can't run unless you learn to walk first. Do you read much? I feel that one can learn more magic from books when one is starting out than what you can from the videos. Don't get me wrong here, the videos that are out are very good, yet they do not leave much for the imagination, and the true magic one does comes from the imagination. Without imagination, it is just tricks and puzzles for your audience. The books I suggest you look for are as follows. . .
SHOWMANSHIP FOR CONJOURERS, by Henning Nelms... BOBO'S COIN MAGIC, by J.B. BoBo... NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON'T vol.1 and vol.2 (sorry, I don't remember the author)... and last but not least, THE TARBELL SERIES OF MAGIC, by Harlan Tarbell.
