Magician's Wax is really beeswax. It is used by magicians because at room temperature it is hard, but if you squeeze it a little between your fingers, it gets soft and tacky. Also, you can scrape it off with your fingernail and leave no residue.
Beeswax is used outside of magic by tailors, to lubricate thread when sewing thru really dense, tough fabric. So aside from magic shops, you can buy it at a store which sells sewing supples, or get some from a tailor near you.
You might be able to use a smaller dab of magician's wax than the stuff from Office Supply. Also, it's a bit harder to see.
